In most cases, the salary of public school teachers is based on the number of years they have taught and the degrees they hold. Salary increases with more experience and more advanced degrees as outlined in the school district's Teacher Pay Schedule (also referred to as Steps and Lanes).
The Teacher Pay Schedule is defined in the school district's Collective Bargaining Agreement, which is the labor contract established between public schools and the unions representing school employees. Every school district in Utah has a Collective Bargaining Agreement. Utah's public Charter Schools, on the other hand, do not have Collective Bargaining Agreements since none of them have unionized employees. Instead, their salary policies are set by the charter school board.
Performance Pay or Merit Pay compensates teachers based on their performance or value add to the classroom rather than just their experience and education level. Several charter schools in Utah already employ some form of Performance Pay in addition to teachers' base salary.

Differential Pay increases the compensation for teachers in hard-to-staff areas (such as math, science, and special education or high-need schools). Utah currently has a statewide differential pay program that provides certain math and science teachers an annual bonus of $4,100.
